“Your prenatal vitamins may be harming your baby.” That’s how a medical colleague alerted me to a discovery that would change my view of supplements in pregnancy forever.

As a health and wellness expert, I have always believed that prenatal vitamins are a fundamental pillar for a healthy pregnancy. However, a revolutionary new study from the University of Colorado has just shaken everything we thought we knew about these supplements.

“During pregnancy, many women depend on prenatal vitamins and minerals to support their health and the development of the baby,” says Dr. Laura Borgelt, lead author of the study. But are these supplements really safe?

I will share with you an alarming discovery that has kept me awake for days. Imagine: some of the most popular prenatal vitamins contain dangerous levels of heavy metals. Yes, you read it right — heavy metals like lead and arsenic!

“Sarah, this is absolutely shocking!” a fellow dietitian told me when I showed her the results of the study. “ How is this still happening in 2024?”

The study analyzed 47 different prenatal vitamins, and the results are at least disturbing. Seven products had arsenic levels above safe limits, two contained excess lead and — hold on — thirteen…
