Demystifying Our Relationship with Water

I confess I was once one of those people obsessed with water bottles. You probably know the type: those who carry enormous containers everywhere, as if they were a sacred amulet against all the evils of the universe. Ironically, while I strived to reach the almost mythical goal of eight glasses a day, I never stopped to question: does my body really need all this water?

I vividly remember the day my two-liter bottle fell in the middle of an important meeting, flooding the conference room and my ego along with it. Between the embarrassed looks of colleagues and my boss’s soaked laptop, I had my epiphany: maybe we were all blindly following a dogma without scientific foundation.

The truth is, we’ve been conditioned to accept certain “truths” about hydration as if they were commandments written in stone. But let me tell you a secret I learned after extensive conversations with experts: our body is much smarter than we give it credit for. It has developed, over millions of years of evolution, a sophisticated system to tell us exactly when we need water. It’s called thirst.
